Dear Parents,

Iberville Parish Public Schools is beginning to implement a process to assist all students in achieving success. This program is called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The following is a brief explanation of the MTSS program

“What is MTSS?”
“MTSS is a multi-step process of providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children.  Individual children’s progress is monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention.  MTSS is most commonly used in addressing reading, math and behavior, but it can also be used in other areas.  The MTSS process is flexible and designed by school to meet the needs of their students.”

A dilemma many parents and teachers face is how to help children who are having academic or behavioral difficulties in school. All parents want to see their children do well in school, and it can be frustrating when a child has trouble reading, doing math, writing, or meeting behavioral expectations.  MTSS is a multi-level approach to providing supports and interventions to students who are struggling. MTSS is a means to intervene early, using academic or behavioral supports and increasingly intensive interventions in the general education setting, to help the student.

MTSS is used for students who struggle to meet behavioral expectations, as well as students with academic concerns. You may have already heard of the Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) program, which is the program Iberville Parish has used for behavioral MTSS. Part of this process includes developing and teaching specific behavioral expectations to our students. These behaviors will be positively reinforced throughout the school for the remainder of your child’s educational career at Iberville Elementary.
